In and around the city of Karaburun one can find many beaches. Some of them are reachable by road, others can bee visited only by boat.

Karaburun City has two beaches which bear the “Blue Flag” label, i.e. the Bodrum Beach and the Aquarium Beach (Incirlikoy). The other beaches are the Kuyucak Beach and the Mimosa Beach. As you can read in the right column the “Blue Flag” label is an award for the guarantee of the quality of the sea water and the environment. It is therefore very important that, together with the local authorities, we protect our beaches and environment overall.

There are two more little beaches located left and right of the little fishing port of Karaburun. Further away from the center you can enjoy the calm of the beaches of Esendere, Saipalti, Igdealti, Büyükkent, Dolungaz, Yildizkent, Akçakilise, Yeniliman and Kumbükü. Although these nice beaches are not equipped yet with sanitary facilities, the municipality is determined to make efforts to install the necessary infrastructures.

If you want to spend your holiday in the midst of an unspoiled nature, listening to the sounds of breaking waves, birds and crickets, than Karaburun is the right place to go.

What is the Blue Flag ?

The European Union has defined the guidelines and the minimum standards for the microbiological parameters, used to measure the water quality of the swimming areas of its seas and lakes.

In 1987 the European Foundation for Environmental Education started the Blue Flag Campaign. The campaign was first adopted by 11 EU member states. Later on, the other member states joined the campaign.  Upon the many requests from countries outside the EU, the European Foundation for Environmental Education opened the campaign up to other countries in 2001 and changed its name to Foundation for Environmental Education

The Blue Flag Campaign comprehends four basic themes, i.e.:

The quality of the swimming water.
Guidelines for environmental education and information campaigns.
Advertising of clean and safe beaches and marinas for the public.
Environmental management

These basic themes are defined by 27 criteria. The beaches which meet these criteria get the Blue Flag award for one year. You can find the names of all beaches who got the Blue Flag Award on www.blueflag.org.

Turkey started working on the Blue Flag Campaign as from 1991 on, after the European Foundation for Environmental Education accepted Finland to join the Blue Flag Campaign.

In Turkey, the Blue Flag Campaign is coordinated by the Turkish Foundation for Environmental Education (TÜRÇEV) which was jointly set up by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
